Connect an External Switch
You can use an external switch as a click method or to trigger additional actions when using eye gaze and the Hiru eyetracker.
Fun fact: You can use two click methods simultaneously. You can dwell to click once, and next time time use the switch!
How to connect:
- Check Compatibility: Ensure your Bluetooth switch is compatible with your iPad.
- Enable Bluetooth: Go to Settings > Bluetooth and toggle it ON.
- Power On: Turn on your switch.
- Pair the Device: Press the Pair button on your switch. On your iPad, look under the Bluetooth devices list and tap the name of your switch to connect.
- Verify Connection: Confirm the switch shows as Connected in the Bluetooth menu.
- Enable AssistiveTouch: Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch and toggle it ON.
- Map Your Actions: While in the AssistiveTouch menu, scroll down to the Pointer Devices section and follow this path:
Devices > Bluetooth Devices > [Your Switch Name] > Customize Additional Buttons - Assign Function: Press the physical button on your switch, then select your preferred action (e.g., Single-Tap) from the menu that appears.
Recommendation: If you have a double switch, select Single-Tap as the first action and Open Menu as an action of the other switch.
This is very useful for Early Stage users who tend to open the menu by mistake. Caregiver can control the Assistive touch menu by hand.

*If you experience a persistent loading error in the Bluetooth Devices section, try connecting the switch distributor, as your switch might not be compatible with the Hiru eye tracker.
